New York Rain

I was able to visit and explore New York city again in 2011 while visiting the Pastel Society of America Thirty-Ninth Annual Open Juried Exhibition For Pastels Only. I was honored to have “Ted Drewes” be a part of this exhibit and was able to see some really great work. This street scene is from one of my nights wandering the city streets. I have no idea the number of times I erased and started over on the windows on the right, but it was a lot.

This picture of my cousin originally started out as a study for a larger piece. The larger piece was going to be a combination of several images. I never really got that idea into a composition that I was happy with, but I did complete the study.

Evening Drive By

Normally I work from photographs that I have taken. However, for this image I was driving home when I decided I really liked the sunset. As I was driving, I had a friend take some photos of the sunset for me. I can’t remember if I used just one image or combined two to get the sky and the headlights both as I wanted them.

This one is basically a study from one of my photos of the mission.

6pm

While out cycling, the sunlight shinning under my review mirror created an interesting and inviting view of a street scene that I had taken many times without a second thought. I had used pastels over acrylics before, but it was the first time I did an entire piece over acrylics and on canvas.

Lost

The bright daylight in contrast to the darkness and silhouettes in the structure to be quite interesting when looking at the rich colors that were created. In the space there were plenty of people, but everyone was quiet and wrapped up in their own thoughts.
